Logbooks

The single most important thing I did in my shop is to start documenting everything. Notepads full of how a project went, what settings I used, and both my frustrations and my successes. It's fairly easy to remember the projects you run every day, but looking back six months to remember the exact settings you used to engrave what brand of brass blanks? Proper notes save time and money, and any good researcher, scientist, or business owner will tell you: if it doesn't get written down, it never happened.

When I started thinking about getting better lab books, instead of whatever notebook was on sale, I was disappointed in the prices I had to pay. It's not that I didn't like what was available, I just didn't like the thought of paying so much for a notebook. I was born in the last millenium, so I still think notebooks are a dollar.

I made my own notebook and decided to share it with the community, hopefully to help other people out with their own shops.

I utterly failed to bring the price down.

This is a story about costs and if they come from the gross or the net; I lost. I can make a dime while the distributer makes thirty times that, or I can charge enough to make three dollars on the deal. I'm still losing, but I had a plan.

I'm putting the individual pages online for free so people can improve their lives at the cost of their own paper and ink. If you want a bound version, you can buy them from Amazon or directly from me at shows or wherever else I happen to have one on hand. I appreciate the sentiment (and the money) but I want people to have the choice; if money is tight, here you are. If you have more money than time, I appreciate the sale.

All I ask is that you don't bind the pages and sell them. It would be a jerk move.

I hope you find something here that helps make your life just a little bit better.

Between the Borders: The American Insurgent

American Insurgent analyzes insurgency and counterinsurgency from the most popular and widely available sources, from the 1940s to modern publications, and discusses not only the probable mechanisms of an American insurgency, but also the precursors already in place in America, from dehumanization of the opposition to disinformation campaigns.

Few get to choose sides in a conflict, and the fear of the opposition getting a first strike often leads to tragedy. The belief of a person motivates them more than the reality, and the public has shown they believe conflict is always on the horizon. Decide for yourself.
